Inspector General, Bureau Of Prisons Probe More Alleged Abuse Of Muslim Inmates

The Justice Department Inspector General and Bureau of Prisons officials are investigating several new allegations that employees of federal prisons mistreated Muslim inmates, according to a new report.

As required by the PATRIOT Act, the report discloses several complaints by Muslim inmates who say they were discriminated against by BOP employees. In all, the Inspector General processed 1,065 new civil rights or civil liberties complaints between Jan. 1 and June 30 and found 155 of the complaints required further review. That's down from the previous six month period, when 1,293 new complaints were processed.

Report: Private Prisons Love Mass Incarceration, And Want Politicians To Love It Too

Private prison companies have helped fuel government policies which lead to an increase in prison population and boost their profits, according to a recent report.

The private prison population has grown 353.7 percent in the past 15 years, according to a study by the Justice Policy Institute. Major private prison companies have an incentive to encourage policies which keep that number on the rise.

Bureau Of Prisons Director Announced Resignation After Drunk Driving Incident

When Harley G. Lappin, the director of the Bureau of Prisons, announced his plans to retire last week after 25 years at the agency, Attorney General Eric Holder praised him as a "sound steward of taxpayer dollars" who had "served as an example of integrity and professionalism."

But it turns out there was a bit more to the story. Andrew Ramonas of the legal news website Main Justice reports (reg. req.) that Lappin was arrested back in February and is facing drunk driving charges stemming from an incident in Annapolis, Md.

DOJ Watchdog Investigating The Abuse Of Muslim Federal Inmates

The Justice Department's Inspector General is investigating two incidents involving Bureau of Prisons employees who allegedly abused federal prisoners who were Muslim in the second half of 2010 due to their choice of religion -- and has referred 16 other incidents to BOP for further investigation.

Between July 1 and Dec. 31 of last year, the Inspector General processed 1,293 new civil rights or civil liberties complaints and found 1,072 of them did not fall within the OIG's jurisdiction or did not warrant further investigation. Most of the incidents they did examine in the report revolve around the alleged abuse of Muslim prisoners.
