Focus On The Family Saves Students' Anti-Homosexuality Day

In the wake of a number of gay students' suicides this fall, and a national conversation about bullying, Exodus International, a group dedicated to "freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus Christ," announced that it would no longer sponsor The Day of Truth. An annual event that encourages students to "counter the promotion of homosexual behavior," The Day of Truth has been organized as a counter-event to the much larger, Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network-sponsored Day of Silence held every April.

But The Day of Truth is not going away. The James Dobson-founded Christian ministry Focus on the Family has stepped in to replace Exodus International as the event's sponsor, and has re-branded and re-framed it The Day of Dialogue.

Focus On The Family: Anti-Bullying Efforts Are A Gay Front

Focus on the Family has a message for gay rights activists: stay off the playground.

Candi Cushman, an education analyst for the James Dobson-founded group, told The Denver Post this weekend that gay rights advocates have inserted their agenda into anti-bullying efforts, at the expense of Christian values.

Dobson's Exit From Focus: A Family Affair?

There's another wrinkle in the story of James Dobson's exit from Focus on the Family: an unnamed Focus board member told the New York Times in January that because Dobson's son Ryan had a divorce several years ago, Ryan could not replace his father at the helm of the group's popular radio show.

Yesterday we told you about the possibility that Dobson and Focus, arguably most powerful Christian conservative organization in the country, had a less than amicable breakup that resulted in Dobson departing last month as host of the Focus radio program, which reaches 1.5 million listeners.

A prominent friend and supporter of James Dobson believes Dobson was pushed aside by the new leadership of Focus on the Family, who want the powerhouse evangelical ministry to project a softer image on issues ranging from abortion to gay marriage to relations with President Obama.

Dobson founded Focus on the Family in 1977 and spent the next 25 years building it into the influential Christian conservative group it is today.
