Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) on Friday became the first Republican cosponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill which would repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
"I voted against the constitutional amendment defining marriage so I'm pleased to co-sponsor the repeal of DOMA and work with my colleagues on marriage equality," Ros-Lehtinen said in a statement released by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY).
Opening statements at the House Foreign Affairs Committee's hearings on the unrest in Egypt indicated that members of the committee plan to focus on why the Obama administration didn't have a contingency plan in place due to the instability in the region and whether the Muslim Brotherhood is a legitimate party in the democratic process.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)Tuesday, Reps. Peter King (R-NY) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) called Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf -- best known for his work with multicultural Cordoba Initiative to build a mosque and community center in Lower Manhattan -- a "radical" and criticized the Obama Administration for including him on a Middle East speaking tour. That tour, which includes stops in Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, is designed by the public diplomacy office to explain to Muslims abroad what it's like to be a Muslim in America.
Outside of how getting constantly called a radical by American politicians busy flacking the proposed "Ground Zero mosque" for political purposes might affect Rauf's view of what it's like to be a Muslim in America, there's one other big problem with King's and Ros-Lehtinen's accusation: Rauf already represented America in this way, under the Bush Administration.

The conservative lawmaker sent out an email last week inviting potential donors to "serve as a member of my advisory group by attending my April 27 dinner," and making a $2,500 contribution. It continued: "When the GOP regain[s] the majority, I would turn to you for advice on pertinent issues affecting our nation."
