A majority of New York City voters approve of the NYPD's job performance and how it deals with Muslims, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday defended the legality of the NYPD's covert monitoring of Muslims in New York and New Jersey.
"Everything the NYPD has done is legal, it is appropriate, it is constitutional," Bloomberg said on WOR radio.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)An anti-Muslim movie was screened to New York Police Department personnel "on a continuous loop" for between three months and one year of training, according to NYPD documents obtained by the Brennan Center for Justice.
An NYPD spokesman said last year that the Clarion Fund's "The Third Jihad," a film which features an Islamic flag flying over the White House, was screened "a couple of times when officers were filling out paperwork before the actual coursework began" and characterized it as a "wacky film."
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)When he wasn't smoking pot with the New York Police Department's confidential informant or trying to manually cut off the tip of his penis, "lone wolf" terror suspect Jose Pimentel was running a jihadist website on Google's Blogger platform.
Now Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) wants Google to implement a policy explicitly banning terrorist material on their Blogger servers and set up a YouTube-style "flag" system to bring such material to Google's attention.
TPM obtained a letter sent by Lieberman, chair of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, to Google CEO Larry Page on Tuesday calling for him to make some changes to their policy.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)Jose Pimentel, the "lone wolf" arrested in the terror sting run by the New York Police Department, smoked marijuana with the NYPD's cooperating informant in the case, an official familiar with the sting tells TPM.
An official with the local prosecutor's office said they were personally unaware of the marijuana detail on Monday afternoon. The NYPD did not respond to a request for comment. The marijuana detail was also reported by the New York Times on Monday night.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)Jose Pimentel wasn't exactly hiding.
The 27-year-old accused of plotting to attack New York with pipe bombs was operating a website that espoused his beliefs in committing terror against the U.S. and was relatively well known in law enforcement circles.
Federal authorities passed on the case -- with one source telling TPM on Sunday night that the FBI passed several times, and an official telling the Associated Press on Monday that Pimentel "didn't have the predisposition or the ability to do anything on his own." That's leaving observers wondering what exactly the feds didn't like about the case and setting up another squabble in the long-running turf war between the New York Police Department and the FBI.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)A former official with the Department of Homeland Security wants the Justice Department to probe the New York Police Department for their infiltration and surveillance of Muslim communities.
Sahar F. Aziz, Associate Professor of Law and Texas Wesleyan School of Law, encouraged the Justice Department to open an investigation into the NYPD during a DOJ-sponsored conference on post-Sept. 11 discrimination on Wednesday.

PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)The NYPD's counterterrorism unit has the means to take down an aircraft "in a very extreme situation," according to New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)A secret program in the NYPD surveilled and documented the day-to-day lives American citizens in Moroccan communities, the Associated Press reports.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)The CIA has launched an internal investigation into whether the agency broke any laws by closely cooperating with the NYPD's antiterrorism operations in Muslim communities after September 11.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)The New York Police Department, with help from the CIA, is running antiterrorism operations outside of their jurisdiction that target ethnic communities in a way the federal government can't, Adam Goldman and Matt Apuzzo report for the Associated Press.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)The New York Police Department has used a movie that portrays Muslim-Americans as jihadis hell-bent on destroying the United States from within in its counter-terrorism training for officers.
The Village Voice reports today that the NYPD has shown "The Third Jihad" to officers taking their mandatory counter-terrorism courses.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)The New York Police Department has confirmed to TPM that a cab driver in Manhattan was allegedly stabbed by a passenger who asked if the cabbie was Muslim, and says the incident is being treated as a hate crime. The suspect has been charged with attempted murder and other crimes.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)Bernard Kerik, the former NYPD commissioner who served during 9/11 and was President Bush's first choice for Homeland Security secretary, will report to prison today to begin a four-year sentence. In February, Kerik pleaded guilty to lying to White House officials during his DHS vetting process and to charges of tax fraud.
Yesterday, Kerik, who has been under house arrest since his sentencing, reflected on the past 10 years in a lengthy blog post titled, "It is time to move forward."
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (3)Najibullah Zazi has been indicted on a charge of conspiracy to use a weapons of mass destruction -- explosive bombs -- the Justice Department has announced.
Zazi, who lives outside Denver, had previously been charged with making false statements to investigators, after he was questioned by the FBI in connection to that New York City terror probe.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (1)Fallout from that New York City terror probe...
The New York Times reports:
