They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without demand. It never did and it never will." • My sympathies to Mr. Beutler and I hope he makes a full recovery.

As someone who lived in Adams-Morgan long before the yuppie hordes took over, I am always amazed at how much has changed over the past few decades. Back when I attended elementary school at the old Morgan Community School (the annex was on Euclid Street),I felt protected by the watchful eyes of the "village". Sure, drugs and crime existed. However, from Columbia Road to U Street, my friends and I knew and WERE KNOWN by the largely working-class or professional families that had lived in the same neighborhood for decades. These families attended the same schools and churches, patronized the same stores and made Adams Morgan a relatively safe place for children.

Several of the police officers, shop owners, teachers and administrators at the former Adams and Morgan Community Schools lived in the neighborhood and their children attended these schools. During the late seventies, entire families were displaced due to gentrification and Adams Morgan became a trendy shell of its former progressive self. Violent muggings (like the one in which Mr. Beutler was assaulted) were once extremely rare but now seem to be the norm.

As Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Shaw, and Dupont Circle increasingly become enclaves for the wealthy, crimes of opportunity will continue to increase. What was once a very tightly-knit community is now a fashionable address that is less safe than the so-called grittier neighborhood it replaced. Adams Morgan lost its soul years ago when it became the upscale but relatively transient place that it is now.

  • Membership in the Federalist Society IS the common thread between the parties who promoted FISA, the DOJ firings, torture, renditions, politically motivated criminal investigations, elections tampering and a host of other evils. Then again, the Federalist Society was founded for the sole purpose of aggressively reshaping the entire American political and social landscape using cadres of ultraconservative law students, lawyers, jurists, and legislators.

  • OH, HELL NO!

Hatfield ain't exactly Valerie Plame. This is the same arrogant SOB who frequently bragged about being a former Selous Scout when he worked at USAMRIID. During this same time period, Wouter Basson claimed to have inside contacts at Fort Detrick working with select agents while Project Coast was in full swing. Some coincidence, huh? Both Hatfield and Phillip Zack deserved to be considered persons of interest. Defamation, hah! Smells like a pay-off to me.

  • Mrs Panstreppon,

Good to see you posting again. According to your links, Vector also made Uzi purchases in South Africa in addition to a few other interesting places. Considering Utah's peculiar gun laws, I'm not surprised that Merrill was based out of Bountiful but what amazes me is how little info on the guy is found in the either the Salt Lake Tribune or the Deseret News. It makes me wonder if the guy is related to any LDS General Authorities so I'm checking out that angle. I'm curious to see if Merrill is connected to Botach Tactical and Worldwide Tactical in addition to AEY.
