  • We need to keep in mind what a different kind of election this one is. If Obama's going to win big, it'll become apparent only right before the end. Why? First, McCain has had a reputation for independence for a decade, and it's going to take some time and work to chip away at that. I'd argue this is happening beautifully. People see him as close to Bush and he's proven so inept on the trail, that folks will slowly realize he's not who they thought he was. And second, and probably most important, Obama is new on the scene and black. People like him (his approval ratings are great), but they're not convinced yet he's either ready or they're able to get over any issues with a black president. If he's going to win, it's all going to come together further down the road. Elections aren't won in July, but the groundwork for a victory can be seen as it takes shape. At the moment, I feel good about Obama's prospects.

  • Clearly you haven't thought much about this ad because it's the LACK of info on McCain's attacks that makes it so effective. When you repeat false info a lot of people end up believing it. As Ron Burgundy says: It's science. By going with the blanket bit about McCain falsely attacking Obama on taxes, it conditions people to believe ANY McCain attack on Obama's tax policies is b.s. without reinforcing the very smears they're trying to knock down. Pretty smart of them. Class dismissed.

  • I don't see a WSJ agenda here. The news operation, unlike the editorial page, is solid. This reporter got some info (it may be wrong, as the Obama campaign is hinting) and wanted to be first with the news. For all we know, this could be the result of a ploy by the Obama campaign, to get people thinking it's only 30 mil and then dropping some bigger number.

  • Lord I hope so, because the news about the McCain/RNC cash-on-hand is pretty disturbing. I just dropped some cash on Obama this morning, and hopefully there are others out there like me who have held back for a number of reasons, but now see that without raising a ton of cash, Obama is in trouble. Remember how much it hurt Kerry not to be flush with dough in the summer months. It wouldn't surprise me to see a sudden flood of attack ads, with the GOP smelling a chance to strike a serious blow.

  • I think it's b.s. Yes, in the height of a real battle, I can see this working. But if it doesn't look like the Obama campaign is both responding vigorously and attacking in its own right, I think there's a real possibility the ads could depress donations. Democrats are conditioned to expect the GOP to attack and their guy to respond lamely. Obama needs to go on the offensive. Then the money will roll in.

  • It won't rain. Summer is pretty dry in Colorado. The big precip comes in winter. The weather should be awesome. But FirstRead worries that Obama might be too much of a rock star and the American people will want to elect a tired, old Bush clone instead. I hear he'll be accepting at the local Grange.

  • Typical flip-flop. First Obama says he's going to accept in a convention center, but now, for political expediency, he's talking about speaking in a stadium. So very Muslim of him.
