  • Can't we all just give "Miss Jane Hathaway" a break? Working for the worst president ever has got to be hard enough.

  • Well there really isn't one, but as close as I get it this; Bolton will not be able to stop from making a ass of himself in front of the entire world, there will be no where to hide at this level. Especially for someone with as loud a mouth as Near-Ambassodore Bolton.

This could play well for the Democarts plans to make the 2006 elections a reforrendum on Republican control of the United States. He is a quentisensal insider with these guys and there will be no way to distance themselves from him after this.

Could that be the plan? I know it is paranoid, but is is possbile that they are sending him there so the world will revile us and that will give the the Republicans away to rally the "True Amrerican" vote one more time? Nah, that can't be it, can it?

  • Sure, we all mellow as we age, but isn't that adding wieght to the idea that we need to see his writting from his time as ASG? We will only be able to see his thinking if we can see the full arch of his thought from young fire-brand to reasoned adult. Without that how can we be conifdent that he is not another Grover Norquist, whoes ideas have not mellowed but indeed become more ideological as time goes on?

  • That sounds okay, but the fly in the ointment is that it is far easier say we should develop alternitive fuels than it is to do it.

Just one quick expample. You mention ethanol, which is renewable, but it is endo-energetic. That means that it take more energy to grow the corn, truck it to the factory, and process it into fuel than the fuel produces. Using this method producess a net loss of engergy, not a gain.

By investing in this technolgy, we will only hasten the day that we run out of oil based fuels. I have not seen any research on bio-diesel, but I suspect that it is similar in nature.

This should not stop us from trying, by any means, but as of today we do not have a viable alternative to reduced consumption if we want to effect the cost of oil.

  • You said "How can such a savvy political strategist leave himself so wide open? Surely it couldn't have been hubris. Or maybe it could. After years of steering the media, perhaps the felt untouchable."

That is exactly the point. People think that Rove is some kind of evil genius, but really they are all caught in the same trap, the assumption that no one could be that low and power hungry.

It is this lust for power that can never be satisfied that pulls down all these "evil geniuses". I don't know who said it, but the banality of evil applies to Rove as few cliché’s do.

Rove is no more or less than a political hack that will do anything he can to jump on the other side with both feet. That he got caught on this just means that he had it so easy for so long that the edge came off of his game.

He is street smart and that works for a long time, if other people help, but just like any other thug from the street sooner or later the rules of civil society trip them up and they wind up guests of the state somewhere away from decent people. With any luck, that will happen to our pal Rove.
