  • Agreed, but even if the Supreme Court denies the Dem Prez a particular power, that decision is likely the ultimate decision on the issue, and future Dem AND GOP administrations will, ordinarily, be required to follow that precedent.

  • "So while the Cheney Project may end with the Bush-Cheney administration, future presidents will inherit the fruits of its labors."

Well, at least until they are challenged in court up to the US Supreme Court. And then the Court can wade through all the BS and actually determine which 'powers' are constitutional and which are not, with an eye on the issue that whatever they decide, the power in question will be available/unavailabe to all future administrations, Democratic or Republican or other.

  • Thank you also for keeping St. Bernard Parish on the radar screen, although you should keep your "love" of it tempered to some extent. The folks in St. Bernard are just as deserving of the attention and assistance the other parts of New Orleans is getting. It was horribly crippled by the flooding. It also had its own share of folks stuck on roof tops and in buildings, folks killed in the flooding, life and death trauma--the primary difference being that in the immediate aftermath of the storm St. Bernard was inaccessible to the media while the Lower 9th, Central City and Superdome/Convention Center areas were all accessible. Entire generations of families in St. Bernard have lost everything. It truly is a tragedy that does not get enough attention.

As for the temperment of your feelings, do not forget that a large majority of St Bernard residents were (maybe still are? Remember Rockey who visited the White House?) huge supporters of today's incompetent GOP. And at least prior to the storm they were of the anti-tax, anti-government involvement crowd who would claim that they could take care of themselves and that their money is their money and the government should not be taking their money in taxes. Funny how a natural disaster can change folks views overnight, especially when they are on the receiving end of the tragedy.

Regardless, these are tough folk who need our country's assistance. And I can only hope that we as a country do not forget their plight, as well as the plight of all others in the region affected by last season's hurricanes. Failure really is not an option in and to restoring this area of our country.

  • Playing catch up with theatrics may not help get Bolton back in, but it sure will help Chaffee with his "independent" bona fide. Theatrics are likely planned to give Chaffee a boost in time for the general election.

  • Odds are nothing will happen. But I would hope that whenever that time comes the then US President and Congressional leaders will take that opportunity to open a dialogue with Raoul or whomever is in charge, to work a deal (buyout) for them to cede power, institute open elections, and provide some sort of restitution to those who lost so much during and in the aftermath of the revolution. But, as we have seen, no dialogue, no progress. Where might this have application as an example today, let's see, Iran, Syria, Hamas...nope can't really think of anything.

  • And don't forget Mr. Lieberman's failure on the cloture vote for Alito. That was a big negative vote toward's women's rights--so if Joe wants to look at other issues I can't necessarily see how women's rights is a positive one right now.

  • Don't know if anyone else has said this, but I prefer to think of this as "promoting the general welfare." Which, of course, is one of the purposes this country was founded, according to the Constitution.

  • I want to know why it is acceptable for Cheney and Whittington to be able to run around on unofficial business at a ranch in Texas for weekends with two younger women who were not their wives? Different set of values I guess. Where was Mrs. Cheney? What were these geezers doing with these two women? Something isn't right with this picture.
