I worked for the IRS for quite a while, and I think your statement that as a millionaire you paid 40% in taxes is a flat-out lie. Maybe 40 years that might have happened but I doubt that too. I've personally handled enough multi-million and multi-billion taxe returns to know not a one of them paid anywhere 40%. Add in insignificant (to that income level) SS taxes and top rate state taxes and no one still came near 40%. Since most people at that income level have at least some investment income, they pay lower capital gains tax on. Unless you're a foreign investor who got really poor tax advice, you didn't pay 40%. There is a quirk in the IRS codes that can shove the tax for some very foolish foreign real estate investors way over 40%. But the smart ones know how to play that too.

I'm an American Jew and pretty much a Zionist and I care a lot about Israel. But mainly I'm an American and we're in the midst of a Presidential election campaign that might well decide the future of America. And most of the time I visit TPM Cafe the discussion these days is Israeli matters, arcana to me.

Please, until after the US elections, could they be discussed a bit more here? Pretty please???

And just how in hell is the Census Bureau supposed to know all about everyone finances and assets they can sell to pay the bills. Oh, excuse me, they just tap in the NSACIAFBI database that already has all that although the public and the Congress has been informed. Cheney is taking it with him when he leaves so he can accurately know who to cleanse after the coup of 2009 o whatever.

Umm, Syria and Israel are technically at war. The fact that there's been little shooting recently is irrelevant. War was declared in 1948 by Syria and that status still exists. This also is not the first time Israel has bombed targets in Syria.
