Why wasn't he charged with bribery?
Maybe because bribery is a notoriously difficult charge to get to stick?
The money laundering charges may just be the tip of the iceburg. Ever heard of a superceding indictment?

In all of the coverage of Abramoff scandal, I haven't seen any one ask the question "Just why would certain Indian tribes pay such outrageous sums to various organizations at Abramoff's bidding?" Were the tribes so financially naive that they didn't see anything amiss?
Color me skeptical about the Abramoff attempts at building a gambling empire. Why the interest in SunCruz and Indian gaming? Why has the mafia always been so interested in gambling? Because it's the perfect vehicle for money laundering.
Has anyone ever considered the possibility that Abramoff was laundering money through the Indian tribes? It wouldn't be the first time that Indian tribes have been used as a conduit for illicit activities. Does anyone remember the admittedly bizarre stories about the Cabachons?
